Deep Value

Trading below book value with positive earnings.

Book value is what shareholders would be left with if the company sold its assets and paid its debts at balance-sheet values. Buying below it while the company still makes a profit is Benjamin Graham's original value test.

Book value is only as good as the assets behind it. Banks, REITs and insurers trade below book when investors doubt the loans or buildings are worth what the books say.
