Volume is the footprint of big buyers. A fund building a position can't hide twice the normal number of shares changing hands. When that happens on an up day, with the price above its 50-day average, buyers are pushing the price up.
Index rebalances, options expiry and single block trades can also double a day's volume without anyone changing their mind about the company.
